So, you guys remember my Criminal Minds/SG-1 fic that I asked for help with a while back? It's in the home stretches, which, yay!
The problem is that I haven't actually watched CM in several seasons. Like, I watched it religiously for years, and then after the whole shenanigans with Prentiss "dying" and coming back I kind of drifted away? And I figured, this fic, which has been a WIP since before that point (and a plot bunny before that) could just be set sometime in those first seven seasons or so, and so then I wouldn't have to worry about it. Or I just didn't have to mention what season it was set; after all, the only BAU characters who appear on-screen for more than a few lines are Derek and Rossi and Garcia, and it's a casefic (so few personal details are shared), so one could imagine it taking place at any season since Rossi joined the team, right?
And I suppose I could still do that! But. I just found out that Derek is now married with a baby son at home. And I think that's AWESOME, showing a black action-hero character who often gets stereotyped as the "angry black man" as a family guy. And having a family at home would make the kidfic aspects of the story resonate throughout, rather than feeling (as now) tacked on at the end. It would tie things in nicely. Only problem is ... like I said, I haven't watched the show in YEARS, I'd never even HEARD about this character until today, in order to write her I'd have to watch the episodes she's in, it would probably add quite a few thousand words to the story (which I thought was in the home stretch!). AND THE ROUGH DRAFT IS DUE NEXT SUNDAY. (This fic is for

HALP, WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!?
ETA: Have watched the Savannah Hayes eps available on Netflix, which only has CM through season 10. Alas, the critical eps--"Derek," "The Sandman," and "A Beautiful Disaster," are not available anywhere free that I can find. I mean, I could pay the $3/episode to buy them on Amazon.com, but I don't want the eps in and of themselves. Especially not "The Sandman," which seems to just have one or two short scenes with her in them. And "A Beautiful Disaster" she's in the hospital in labor. "Derek" has a long hallucination from Derek about their relationship, which might be worth it, though.

Date: 2016-06-12 10:47 pm (UTC)From:I definitely would not be going back and adding in stuff tying the family in earlier until after the rough draft deadline; but I'm at the point where it would change what needs to happen next. I was planning on getting several thousand words in today and maybe even finishing it, but then as I got started I did a minor research thing and found this out, and if I did this it would mean spending today reviewing canon instead of getting the writing done.
I think I will, though; I've been worried about the kidfic of it connecting to the casefic aspect, and this will be the perfect bridge. But, ugh. That means I have to watch CM today instead of writing ...

Oh, if your roommate is really into CM, could you ask if there's anything major I need to know that a quick wiki check wouldn't reveal? I know they got an Agent Blake, and she left and was replaced by Agent Callahan. I'm thinking more shifts in team dynamics, that sort of thing.

Date: 2016-06-13 12:49 am (UTC)From:We've now gone through multiple rounds of new teammates. Blake had a chip on her shoulder and had a lot to prove. (She worked with strauss, and strauss sold her out 10+years ago.) She really couldn't *do* serial killers. They took too much out of her.
Callahan probably would have stuck around, but her teenaged niece that she's raised since basically birth was assaulted and kidnapped because Callahan was investigating a child ring. EVERYONE involved needed lots of therapy after that.
Dr. Tara Lewis is *awesome*. She's been working with serial killers for *ages* when they end up in jail. She joins the team part time, since she's still working on that project.
Basically, yes. Team dynamics are obviously different. Lewis is the only one of the three that's never raised a child (Blake's son had a rare disease and died young, I think about 12.), for kid fic purposes. Of the three, Lewis is super awesome; so is Callahan. My guess is that Blake was written off in part because she did not really click with both the team and audiences.
What else can I answer?

Date: 2016-06-13 01:32 am (UTC)From:So, Derek's still in the BAU but his time there has scaled back? And he's married and they have a baby? I'm not sure when to set my fic--I'm leaning to the time when Savannah was pregnant but the baby wasn't born yet.
Here's the plot of the story: (First, my original germ of an idea was that episode early on when Derek holds JJ's baby (or maybe it's bb!hotch? one of the two) and I went, Oooooh, love Derek with baby, I should do a kidfic, and then it got caught up with Stargate, and it percolated for a long time in my backbrain before getting set down in dribs and drabs that I've never been able to finish but couldn't quite let go of and abandon, very frustrating.)
Anyway, it starts out that Detroit has been regularly finding homeless addicts who died of a drug overdose but showed evidence of having been pregnant/given birth to babies they couldn't find any other evidence of. Now, missing babies is bad, but there was no real proof that these women died of anything other than their drug habits getting the better of them. So Derek and Rossi go out to see if they can find any evidence to justify bringing the whole team in. (I mean, they think there are missing babies, but they can't even be 100% sure of that--for all they know, the babies are perfectly safe and being raised by friends, or ended up in the system without being tied back to their mothers, or were stillborn, etc. And they think there are too many dead women who fit a pattern, but can't prove any foul play there either.)
And Derek and Rossi can't find anything, until Davis and Dr. Keller from Stargate show up asking for files on their investigation because it might connect to an investigation they're running. Our guys have Garcia and JJ check into them, and JJ tells them some of the weird rumors she's heard about Project Blue Book, which gets them thinking weird science and corporate espionage, so Garcia gets them a list of Detroit properties currently empty which have ties to the Trust, they find one that's not empty, interrogation of someone working there and they find that it's where the missing babies are and the dead women were all there in a "rehab" facility, and at that point they have the evidence they need to bring the team in but there's no need because they've solved the problem, right? Police and local FBI office can handle things from here.
So they go in the next day to arrest everyone, find 60+ infants and toddlers, a group of women kidnapped off the streets and used as brood mares, and a suspicious lab that implanted the embryos in the women and keeping awfully close watch on the babies that resulted. The Air Force comes storming in at the same time, cue arguments over jurisdiction and classification and what to do with all the babies, and realization that this is only the tip of the iceberg, so there's going to be a whole big multi-agency hunt to bring down the Trust once and for all. (After all, this time the Trust's actions are in the news, and "kidnapped women and experimenting on babies" is really hot stuff.) It comes out that the mad scientists were Trust doctors using DNA stolen from the SGC's list of people with the ATA gene to make more (and stronger) ATA carriers, and guess what, Derek's on the list, and courtesy of a one-night-stand a couple of years back smuggling a used condom out for the Trust, three of those toddlers are his! Derek's off the investigation because it's now a conflict of interest, and he's left to figure out if he's going to take custody of his three kids, and make arrangements if so. He takes them, and they go home to DC to rearrange his life.
I'm thinking that it should be set after they know Savannah is pregnant, and there should be them figuring things out together. I'm also thinking he should ask at least JJ and Hotch for advice, and possibly also Callahan (who would still be on the team then, yes? but in order to write her I would have to watch a LOT more of her season of CM). I'm also thinking that he should be wondering how to better balance life and the team throughout the story, and calling her to talk about stuff.
(On an unrelated note, I'm wondering if I should go back and switch some things up so there's stuff from Davis or Keller's POV, but that would take a lot of redoing, and EVERYTHING ELSE (at this point, 18k words) is from Derek's POV, and so in order to make it balance right, I would have to do a LOT of stuff in other peoples' POV. I mean, if it's just a couple of scenes in a 20k word fic, it's going to stick out like a sore thumb.)
