I think that Kyle isn't really qualified for the internship, but John has always kept tabs on Kyle and Derek, and pulled strings when he realized Kyle had applied to make sure he got it, and then was quietly freaked out that entire summer. I actually have quite a bit of head-canon for this AU, which may or may not ever get written. I think Sarah has had several bouts with cancer, but has survived. I think that Cameron is pretty much on her own, changing identities every ten years or so to keep it from being noticed that she doesn't age, though she and John both keep tabs on current events, looking for any sign of Skynet. I think John has told his wife and kids about Judgment Day, made sure they got basic training, which they tolerate but don't really believe deep down. I think when Kyle was in his twenties, John took a picture of Kyle and a picture of Sarah from around the time he was born, and had an expert photoshop the two together, and gave it to his mother for her birthday. I think Sarah thanked him and put it in a drawer and never looks at it, because it may be Kyle Reese but he's not her Kyle Reese, not deep down.

Season 2 is where it really gets good. You should watch it.
